Статья платежного баланса (balance of payments), проводки по которой характеризуют размер оттока из страны или притока в ее национальную экономику из-за границы капитала, предназначенного для создания, расширения или модернизации предприятий, производящих товары или оказывающих услуги. Хотя эти коммерческие предприятия и находятся на территории иностранного государства, но полные или частичные права собственности на них принадлежат зарубежному инвестору. Вложение капитала за границей относится к категории прямых иностранных инвестиций (direct foreign investment ), когда в результате их осуществления возникает возможность реально контролировать производственную деятельность зарубежной экономической единицы. Капиталовложения в иностранные предприятия, позволяющие оказывать лишь ограниченное влияние на его деятельность, являются портфельными инвестициями (portfolio investment ).
